In 1992, Fernando Bermudez was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 23 years to life in prison at the age of 21 years old. However, in 1993, all five eyewitnesses recanted their identifications, saying they had been pressured by the police. In 2009, Fernando’s conviction was overturned and the charges against him dismissed with prejudice.
In 2020, Fernando spoke at several panel discussions after screenings of the film, Just Mercy.He has also spoken at the University of North Carolina. Fernando has conducted over 300 successful lectures in the United States and throughout the world including Italy, Germany, Japan, and France.
